RIS prides itself on creating an in-school culture which is family like and reflects our school’s mission statement. “Rainbow International School enables students to achieve academic excellence while being encouraged to be global leaders who promote global peace through equity, innovation, diversity, integrity, community, care for the environment and self-respect.” Our students and teachers come from over twenty different nations. We work together to build a school which is accepting of everyone and promotes a celebration of who we are and where we are from. This is demonstrated throughout the various aspects of our school including our guiding statements, curriculum, and extension activities.
Each school year has approximately 190 contact days, starting on mid-August 16 and ending the beginning of June. The winter break in December is usually 3 weeks, and the summer break is usually 8 weeks, from June to August. In the fall, the students normally start school in mid-August right after the Teacher’s Planning Week. New Staff Orientation starts on beginning of August.
School hours normally starts at 8:30 AM, and ends at 3:00 PM, except Wednesdays. School end at 1:15 PM for students on Wednesdays. Teachers are expected to be at the school before 8:00 AM and be in the classroom by 8:20 AM. Teachers should remain in the school 4:00 PM. Break duty on a rotating basis is a part of a teacher’s routine.
The work environment at RIS is welcoming and comfortable The day begins by students sharing morning announcements during homeroom period. First period starts at 8:30. We observe 45 minute periods and do not have bells so that learning is not interrupted. Our school day includes two break times that are signaled via music played over the loudspeaker.
RIS understand the importance of all teachers being well-fueled to keep up the energy that is required for the day. All teachers are provided with daily lunches in the school cafeteria as well as snack. Teachers each lunch with students in the cafeteria. They also enjoy snack with their students in the classroom or in the teacher lounge during break time. To foster a strong sense of community among the staff, RIS staff members meet once a month for breakfast. Teachers take turns volunteering to cook and share breakfast cuisine from their home countries.
In addition to breakfasts teachers have many opportunities to work together. To ensure that all teachers are informed and receive adequate support for daily lessons and school events, RIS teachers meet weekly for meetings. Department meetings and whole-staff meetings are held bi-weekly. This gives teachers shared planning time to regularly collaborate and share ideas as well as resources.
On of the great resources that teachers have is the technology in the classroom. The cutting edge technology is one of the wonderful benefits of working at RIS. All teachers receive a MacBook from the school to use for preparing their lessons. Also, every classroom has a SMARTBoard installed that teachers utilize to make lessons even more interactive which allow them to hone their 21st century learning skills.
Staff meetings are compulsory for all teachers and are held after school. Teachers are also required to attend the after school collaborative planning meetings.
