We are pleased to announce the opening of our school library. At RIS, we believe that a strong library program encourages students to read willingly and joyfully. Beginning in January 2010, RIS students will begin attending library classes in our new and growing facility. Everyone will have the opportunity to sign out books to enjoy reading at school and at home. Our librarian, Ms. Howard, encourages all parents to drop in to see our new space.

10 Ways Parents Can Encourage Their Children to Benefit From Our Library

1. Talk to your children about what they are reading and find out what kinds of books they enjoy.
2. Ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in a story.
3. Read aloud to your child.
4. Encourage your child to read aloud to you.
5. Set aside a regular reading time for your family everyday (before bed or after dinner are usually good times).
6. On gift-giving occasions, give books and magazines based on your child's current interests.
7. Limit your children's TV viewing in an effort to make time for other activities, such as reading.  But never use TV as a reward for reading, or a punishment for not reading.
8. Let your children see you reading for pleasure in your spare time.
9. Encourage older children to read to their younger brothers and sisters.
10. Try out different kinds of books to see what appeals to your children.
